BIRTHDAY BLISS IN BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

There’s something magical about celebrating a birthday while traveling, and this year, I had the incredible fortune of spending mine journeying from Prague to Budapest. The anticipation was electric—I couldn’t wait to experience Hungary’s capital, a city I had dreamt of exploring.

En route to Budapest, we made a stop in Bratislava, Slovakia, a charming city that surprised me with its old-world beauty and inviting atmosphere. Joined by my newfound friends from Australia and South Africa, we wandered through the picturesque streets, soaking in the quaint charm. We settled into an elaborate little café, where we each had our own slice of chosen cake, laughing and toasting to new friendships. It was the perfect interlude, and I took the opportunity to practice my photography skills, capturing the essence of this delightful town.

As we crossed into Hungary and approached Budapest our tour director, set the mood by playing an unforgettable song—Budapest by George Ezra. The melody was hypnotic, a perfect prelude to the adventure ahead. That tune would echo in my mind throughout my time in the city, becoming the soundtrack of my birthday trip. If you haven’t yet, take a listen to Ezra’s music—his soulful, laid-back vibe pairs perfectly with travel.

That evening, Budapest unveiled its magic in the most spectacular way. Our group celebrated with an evening dinner cruise along the Danube, gliding between the illuminated wonders of Buda and Pest. The sight of the Hungarian Parliament Building, bathed in golden light, left me speechless. The city’s grandeur was on full display, reflecting off the water like a dream.

As we dined, the cruise staff delivered a stunning chocolate torte, arranged by Paul, our thoughtful tour director. He led the group in singing “Happy Birthday” to me, filling the boat with warmth and laughter. Along with the torte came another surprise—a thoughtful gift from Paul, a 5×7 print of Bratislava. At home, I keep a wall dedicated to prints and paintings of places I’ve traveled, and this gift would become a perfect addition, a reminder of the sweet stop that began my birthday journey.

The next morning, we set out on a walking tour of Buda, where history met stunning vistas. From atop the hills, we took in sweeping views of Pest and the Danube, a sight that took my breath away. With each step, our guide unraveled stories of Budapest’s past, weaving together tales of resilience and grandeur. Once again, I found myself reaching for my camera, eager to capture the timeless beauty around me. The architecture, the river, the vibrancy of the city—it was all a photographer’s dream.

That night, the birthday celebration continued with a traditional Hungarian dinner show—a lively, colorful evening filled with music, laughter, and the irresistible rhythm of folk dancing. The atmosphere was electric: violins soared, dancers twirled in vibrant costumes, and the clinking of glasses punctuated the beat. When one of the dancers invited me onto the stage, I didn’t hesitate for a moment—dancing has always been my happy place. I stepped into the rhythm effortlessly, letting the music guide me as I mirrored his movements with playful confidence. His eyes widened in surprise, and between spins and laughter, he exclaimed, “You dance very well!” The crowd clapped in time, the lights shimmered, and I couldn’t help but beam—completely lost in the joy of the moment. Soon, the entire room erupted into a joyful chain of people weaving in and around the tables, arms linked and feet shuffling in perfect chaos. The energy was infectious—pure joy, pure connection—and I found myself swept up in the music, the laughter, and the spirit of Hungary itself..

Budapest left an imprint on me, not just as a place I visited, but as a city I truly experienced. It was a birthday filled with laughter, music, breathtaking sights, and unexpected friendships. And every time I hear Budapest by George Ezra, I’m instantly transported back to that moment—the glow of the city, the melody in the air, and the feeling of absolute freedom.

On the Way to Vienna: The Eagle’s Nest

Before reaching Vienna, we made an unforgettable stop—the Eagle’s Nest in Berchtesgaden, perched high in the Bavarian Alps. I’ll admit, I was hesitant to go. The site’s connection to Hitler gave me pause. The idea of standing in a place once meant for such dark purposes felt unsettling.

Yet curiosity and a sense of history pulled me forward. Our bus ascended the narrow, winding mountain road—an engineering marvel carved from solid rock by workers in the 1930s, completed in just thirteen months. The road culminates at a tunnel dug into the mountainside, where a gleaming brass elevator awaits to carry visitors to the summit’s breathtaking peak. Riding in that original elevator felt surreal, as though stepping through time itself.

When the doors opened, any lingering heaviness was replaced by awe. The view was absolutely spectacular—jagged peaks piercing the clouds, the valleys stretching endlessly below. It was, quite literally, breathtaking. Standing there, the air crisp and pure, I felt something shift.

It reminded me of my experience at Machu Picchu—how nature’s grandeur can transcend human history, reclaiming beauty even from places marked by pain. The Eagle’s Nest, for me, became less about its past and more about perspective—how light eventually finds its way back through the cracks.

Upon leaving Eagle’s Nest, we stopped in Salzburg, Austria, where I stepped into the world of The Sound of Music. We wandered through the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, saw the gazebo, Nonnberg Abbey, and Frohnburg Palace. I couldn’t help but hum and sing many of the songs I grew up with, imagining myself twirling through the same streets and gardens where Maria once did. It was pure joy—nostalgic, cinematic, and somehow deeply personal all at once.

As I stood in those iconic spots, it struck me how effortlessly music and memory intertwine. The melodies I once sang as a child, watching Julie Andrews on screen with wide-eyed wonder, now played in real life around me. There was something grounding about it—how moments from our past can resurface in unexpected places, reminding us of who we were and who we’ve become. I felt both like the little girl who dreamed of adventure and the woman who was now living it, halfway across the world, in the very place that inspired those dreams. Salzburg wasn’t just beautiful—it was a reminder that joy can echo through time, rekindled by a song, a scene, or a step taken with wonder.

Vienna, Austria: A Grand Finale

Our final leg brought us to Vienna—the city of waltzes, imperial elegance, and coffee culture. Vienna greeted us with grandeur: wide boulevards, stately palaces, and cafés that seemed to exist in their own timeless rhythm.

We began with free time to explore the city center on our own. There’s a certain elegance to Vienna that you can’t quite put into words—it’s something you feel. As I wandered through the city center, I found myself surrounded by grand architecture that seemed to whisper stories from centuries past. The blend of Baroque beauty and imperial splendor gave every street a sense of timeless grace. I meandered along cobblestone lanes lined with ornate façades, stopping often to admire intricate details—gold accents, marble statues, and snap photos.

That evening we attended the State Opera House for an entertaining Classical Concert consisting of musicians, opera singers, and dancers.  The opulent State Opera House and Hofburg Palace stood as reminders of the Habsburg legacy, yet the city pulsed with modern sophistication.

Our last evening was dinner at Marchfelderhof an eclectic decorated fun entertainment, various rooms, a must see.  As we arrived the restaurant staff was waiting outside waving Austria’s flag, rolled out the red carpet where one of our travelers had to cut the ribbon before we entered. We ate and drank as the musicians strolled around playing the violin.  Finishing up with a keyboard player some of us attempted to waltz.

Reflection: Cities That Stay With You

Central Europe proved to be a treasure trove of history, culture, and serendipity. From Munich’s technological brilliance, Prague’s fairytale streets, to Budapest’s magical birthday celebration, every moment was unforgettable. Traveling with a diverse group fostered deep connections, turning this journey into an experience far richer than sightseeing alone.

As I think back, these cities didn’t just invite exploration—they embraced it, offering a glimpse into the beauty of European culture, camaraderie, and timeless history.
