Sometimes the most magical moments aren’t just in the rides — they’re in the space to breathe, explore, and connect.
After the busy end-of-year holidays, I needed a change of pace. Disney World offered the perfect opportunity: cooler weather, less crowded parks, and wide-open spaces that let me move at my own pace. Across Hollywood Studios, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Animal Kingdom, I found myself appreciating more than attractions — I discovered freedom, fresh air, and the joy of simply being outdoors.
Animal Kingdom: Adventure, Nature, and Reflection
Where Disney meets the wild — and I rediscovered freedom.
A sense of excitement and freedom filled me the moment I stepped into Animal Kingdom. The sun was warm but the air was cool, and I was eager to see the animals walking freely. It took me back to my South African safari, where I realized I could start every morning and end each day on a safari ride. Perhaps that’s why the memory of evening drives with my nephew through the Pennsylvania countryside came rushing back—quiet moments shaped by motion, connection, and open space. Nature and space have a way of grounding me, offering a feeling of freedom, curiosity, and presence.
Riding the Kilimanjaro Safari, I was breathless as elephants, giraffes, and lions roamed the “Savanna” before me. It wasn’t just the spectacle of the animals — the thoughtfulness behind Disney’s conservation efforts struck me deeply.
The elephant and bee project reminded me to continue caring for this planet and all living things.
Using beehive fences as a natural deterrent, elephants are kept away from crops while farmers benefit from honey and pollination. It’s a sustainable, non-lethal solution — a reminder to continue caring for our planet and all living things.
Hollywood Studios: Stepping Back Into Old Hollywood
Retro streets, laughter, and a touch of nostalgia.
Hollywood Studios transported me into a bygone era. The retro architecture and nostalgic storefronts set the scene, evoking classic Hollywood glamour.
The Runaway Train ride in the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre had me laughing the entire time — twisting, twirling, and jostling along the track. Beyond the ride, walking along the streets and admiring the vintage façades reinforced the charm and immersive magic of this park.
Walking through Hollywood Studios felt like stepping into a world frozen in time, full of playful energy and old-school charm.
Magic Kingdom: Nostalgia Through Parade and Performance
Even for adults, magic finds a way.
Magic Kingdom is clearly built for families with children, but I found moments of delight for adults too. I especially enjoyed watching the princesses and heroines parade through Main Street. Families eagerly lined the streets for photos, and the music, energy, and costumes brought out a subtle nostalgia — a reminder of the magic of storytelling, even if I skipped most rides.
The parades reminded me that magic isn’t just for kids — it’s for anyone willing to pause and notice.
Epcot: Exploration, Culture, and Connection
A world to explore — and a bridge to my roots.
Epcot has become my favorite park. What once felt like a place to hop from pavilion to pavilion for drinks or snacks now feels like a world to explore, full of inspiration and curiosity.
Canada’s pavilion left a lasting impression, anchored by its stunning new film that seamlessly showcased all 10 provinces and 3 territories. As the scenes unfolded in a sweeping 360° cinematic vision, I felt an unexpected swell of pride and excitement. The film stirred memories of places I have lived and visited, while simultaneously awakening a deep curiosity for regions still waiting to be explored. It rekindled a desire to return to Canada—not just as a visitor, but as a traveler eager to more fully experience its vast landscapes, diverse cultures, and quiet moments of awe. I hope that everyone who encounters this immersive experience feels the same pull to journey north and discover the beauty of the Great White North for themselves. It left me wishing every pavilion offered a film of this caliber—one that opens minds, sparks curiosity, and inspires a deeper appreciation for travel, learning, culture, and the land itself.
Italy, of course, was my personal highlight. Being able to practice my Italian in restaurants and shops was exhilarating. The pavilion stirred a connection to my roots — roots I once tried to shun — and made the experience far more emotional and meaningful. Epcot, through this personal connection, felt like a bridge between discovery and identity, curiosity and belonging.
Epcot reminded me that travel can be personal, emotional, and educational all at once.
Mindful Moments in Motion
Finding stillness in the rush of the parks.
Even with intentional pacing, the energy of the parks can sweep you up. The rush of visitors creates a race to the next ride, especially when the app shows short wait times. Waiting in line after line can be draining, but I found ways to stay present: slowing my breathing, looking around, doing word search puzzles, and practicing Italian with digital flashcards.
These small pauses helped me preserve energy, work on personal goals, and truly soak in the moments.
Food, Language, and Joy
A bite of culture with every meal.
So much food. So many temptations. I decided to be intentional with my lunch and dinner choices — picking just one treat per day and not overindulging. I also ensured I had a reservation at one of the restaurants each day, a tip from my fitness guru and travel agent extraordinaire, Lindsay Nelson.
Some of my favorite spots: Rose and Crown, Shiki-Sai for sushi, and Tutto Italia in Epcot. A highlight this trip was dinner at Tutto Italia, where I practiced my Italian with the hostess, who warmly encouraged me. Ordering in Italian with the waiter brought a moment of personal pride and joy. And the gnocchi Sorrentino? Amazing — light, plump potato dumplings, or “belly sinkers,” as my dad would call them.
Food at Disney isn’t just fuel; it’s a way to connect with culture, language, and a little slice of happiness.
Sensory Highlights
The little details that make Disney unforgettable.
Disney World is alive with sound, movement, and innovation: happy music drifting through the parks, tranquil ponds and fountains, kids’ laughter (and screams!), and attractions like Test Track, Living with the Land and Awesome Planet file, showcasing incredible technical and creative ingenuity.
The smallest details — a fountain, a song, a laugh — made me feel fully present and deeply appreciative.
Takeaways: Gratitude, Openness, and Hope
Walking away renewed — in mind, body, and spirit.
By the end of the week, I was exhausted in the best way. Disney World had reset me — mentally, physically, and emotionally. I felt grateful for the ability to travel, to return home, and to reconnect with a sense of wonder and possibility.
Most of all, I left with openness and renewed hope: openness to new experiences, new people, and the beauty of the world around me. Renewed hope in humanity — that we are more alike than different, in social governance, and in innovation to save our planet.
Disney World isn’t just about rides and attractions. It’s a space to breathe, reflect, learn, and immerse yourself in joy, culture, and nature.
